What is traded on the Forex market?
The instrument traded by the Forex traders and investors are currency pairs. A currency pair is the exchange of one currency to another. Most currency pairs traded are:
EUR / USD: The euro
GBP / USD: Pound
USD / CAD: Canadian Dollar
USD / JPY: Yen
USD / CHF: Swiss franc
AUD / USD: Aussie

For example, if a trader goes long or buys the Euro, he or she is both buying and selling euro dollar. If the trader is short or sell the same to that of Australia, he or she is simultaneously selling the AUD and buying dollars.
The first currency of each currency pair is referred to as base currency, while second currency is known as the carry trade.
Each currency pair is expressed in units of currency cons necessary to obtain a unit of base currency.
