Foreign Exchange Student Help. 10 pts best answer!?
ADSENSE
I’m currently a sophomore in high school, and I am looking for a program that will let me go to Russia for (next year) my Junior year of school. For somewhere between 6months and 1year. So maybe one or two semesters. So I can learn the language better, and learn some culture, and have new experiences. The only problem is I’ve heard of foreign exchange programs for other students to come here, for example, from Germany to the USA, but I don’t know of any that let you go from the USA to another country. Has any one done this? How does it work? Is it expensive? Is there a program to go through? Is there papers I need to fill out? How do I get started? Thank you!
Many (if not most or all) of the organizations that bring students to the USA will also have outbound programs for American students to go overseas.
If I may, I would like to cast a vote for going with Youth For Understanding (YFU). I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer with YFU. When I have asked exchange students why they chose YFU, I get the following answers: (1) YFU gave them more bang for their buck and/or (2) someone they knew and trusted recommended YFU. 95% of the fees collected by YFU go for direct program costs (airline tickets, support in hosting country, etc.). YFU has been around for 59 years and has learned how to make exchanges successful.
Whatever you do, please make sure that the program you choose is listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit and monitor programs for quality.
YFU does have year, semester (fall), and summer programs to Russia. If you go to http://yfuusa.org/american-students/more-information/alumni-referral.php you can email a boy who went to Russia with YFU for a summer.
The process would go like this (in a nutshell):
a) Gather info and talk to your parents, teachers, and school counselor. Choose a country and length of stay.
b) Apply for the program. (Online, over the phone, by fax or mail, etc.) The application deadline is April 1. Unfortunately, all of the scholarships with options to Russia have deadlines that have already passed. (You could still try, but don’t be surprised if your denied simply because the deadline has passed.)
c) After the organization reviews your file, participate in an in-person interview. This is to make sure you were honest and accurate on your application and to make sure you’re placed with the appropriate host family.
d) Pay for the program. The cost may be a bit shocking, but there are competitive scholarships (of the (typically) 500 students who go overseas with YFU, 300 will have a full or partial scholarship) and other means for raising the money. You definitely will not regret going, but your family will have to decide for itself if it’s “in the cards” financially (and otherwise) speaking.
e) After you get a host family, correspond with them. (Not officially required, just something I think is an extremely good idea.)
f) Go and work hard and enjoy.
g) Come home and share your experience.
I hope this answers your questions.
Good luck to you no matter what you choose!
