what exactly is after hours trading, is this a stock trading on a foreign exchange as well?? I’m pretty knowledgeable about securities, but have always wondered exactly what is going on..whether it is actual trading, or just maybe a forecast of things to come based on options settlements or what??

How does extended hours trading differ from trading during the standard day market?
Due to the nature of the extended hours trading market, trading through an ECN may pose certain risks which are greater than those present during standard market hours. These risks include lack of liquidity, greater price volatility and price spreads, limited access to other markets and market information, price variance from standard market hours, the time and price prioritization of orders, and communication delays. These risks may prevent your order from being executed, in whole or in part, or from receiving as favorable a price as you might receive during standard market hours.
In the extended hours trading systems buyers and sellers enter in limit orders which represents the bid and ask. The lowest ask and the highest bid is represented. If the bid and ask match up then the orders are filled. and the next best bid/ask is displayed as the current bid ask.
Generally the after hours market is very active for a stock if the company releases earnings or major news after the market closes. The movements in the after hours trading allow investors to anticipate where the market will open at the next day.
IF you plan to trade after hours then you will want to review the fee schedule for your brokerage acct since the commissions for after hours trading are higher.
